Agency Reclaims Bandwidth to Deliver New Services while Protecting Quality of VoIP and Other Mission-Critical Applications
SUNNYVALE, Calif., July 7, 2010 – Blue Coat Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: BCSI), the technology leader in Application Delivery Networking, today announced that the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (IRBM) has deployed Blue Coat® PacketShaper® appliances between more than 40 branch offices throughout Malaysia to efficiently deliver voice, video and data applications to more than 10,000 employees. With 55 PacketShaper appliances deployed throughout its network, IRBM has visibility into the applications running between the branch offices and powerful quality of service controls to prioritize and protect latency-sensitive Voice over IP (VoIP) sessions.
“We wanted to achieve better data throughput in our networks than could be achieved with a router’s default QoS mechanism without resorting to increasing the bandwidth between our branch offices,” said Suhaini bin Jusoh, principal assistant director at IRBM. “The PacketShaper appliances give us visibility into our applications and the ability to improve network performance through application control, resulting in more responsive applications and significant efficiency improvements.”
PacketShaper appliances, which can identify and classify more than 700 applications, provide IRBM with visibility into the applications on its network. PacketShaper appliances also deliver enhanced intelligence about those applications, allowing the agency to classify them into different categories, such as multimedia, mission critical, standard and economy. With granular policy-based controls, IRBM can then apply quality of service measures to each class of applications, protecting and prioritizing the mission-critical class while containing other classes comprised of non-critical applications.
Through the integrated workspace that PacketShaper appliances provide, the IRBM IT department can monitor application response times and utilization in real time, including peak bandwidth demands, and can view historical trends. The real-time view into bandwidth usage allows IRBM to monitor application performance and quickly respond to changing conditions. Additionally, IRBM can immediately see the impact of new quality of service measures on application performance, enabling the agency to improve employee productivity.
IRBM also deployed Blue Coat Policy Center to centralize configuration, policy management and software distribution for the individual PacketShaper appliances. Policy Center simplifies day-to-day management of the PacketShaper appliances and consistently applies application priorities across the network.
“By utilizing PacketShaper appliances to apply advanced bandwidth management policies to the applications on its network, IRBM has reclaimed bandwidth for other advanced business applications,” said Matt Young, vice president, Asia Pacific region, Blue Coat Systems. “Now IRBM has integrated visibility, intelligence and control capabilities to optimize application performance and increase the productivity of its 10,000 employees.”
IRBM is the primary revenue collecting agency for Malaysia with responsibility for administering, assessing and enforcing payment of a broad range of taxes, including income, petroleum, property gains, and estate and stamp duties.
