No Surprise: Malware is increasing

November 16, 2011 - By Tim Chiu

It should be no surprise to anyone in the security industry that malware is up, especially malware delivered through the web.  There were two news items this week that included some interesting statistics around how fast malware is actually increasing.

First, in the mobile market, it was reported that Android-based malware is up 472% since July 2011 according to Juniper. If you've been following the news this year, you would already have known that malware on Android devices has been increasing faster than on any other platform.  In addition to, the news article also reported that malware targeting smartphones is up 250% from 2009 to 2010.

In the second news article, it was reported that Collective Intelligence (CI), the engine for Internet security created in 2006 by Panda Security's malware research laboratory, recently processed its 200 millionth malware file via the cloud.  It's obvious from Panda's report that malware in general is increasing at a rapid rate. According to Panda, a third of all the malware in existence was created in the first 10 months of 2010. The average number of threats created daily rose from 55,000 in 2009 to 63,000 in 2010 to 73,000 this year.

It's a good reminder why you need security on your network, and for mobile devices. While your secure web gateway provides security when you're on the corporate network, mobile devices including laptops, iOS devices and those running Android typically roam to other networks as the end-user takes the device home and on trips.

That's when cloud based security becomes important. Cloud and mobility make sense together, since the mobile client will be tied to a cloud security solution regardless of the network the end-user is using. As we see more mobility invade the workplace, you'll undoubtedly see more secure web vendors touting cloud as the solution in the coming year.  Blue Coat offers web security as a service with the Blue Coat Cloud Service, offering the same levels of protection as the on-premise Blue Coat solutions.

Even if you aren't ready to embrace the cloud, you need to make sure your end-users on your local network are protected from the rapidly growing and evolving web based threats, and that's where proactive, intelligent and aware security solutions like Blue Coat's ProxySG with Blue Coat WebFilter and ProxyAV make sense.
