Blue Coat Application Performance Monitoring identification and classification technologies automatically discover and classify network traffic - even traffic from recreational and malicious applications that have been designed specifically to avoid detection. By seeing what applications are consuming bandwidth, Identification and classification provide the first step towards monitoring, prioritizing and controlling the performance of business applications.

Using unique application-layer visibility, discovery can distinguish between and classify over 600 applications and goes way beyond traditional probe or network monitoring products, which can identify only well-known, well-behaved applications and HTTP and FTP transactions that use unique and published port numbers. Blue Coat provides deep insight into application sub-classifications, validation methods, and behavioral characteristics, and uses unique multi-packet flow analysis and profiling intelligence for encrypted, tunneled and evasive applications.

Classification then maps the discovered applications to a classification library, providing a listing of the applications running on your network which then form the basis of monitoring performance metrics, service level agreements and prioritization.
