David Murphy - Strategic Advisor


David Murphy is a strategic advisor to CEO Greg Clark and the Blue Coat Board of Directors. Following the acquisition of Blue Coat by private equity firm Thoma Bravo in 2012, Mr. Murphy transitioned from an advisory role to formally join Blue Coat as its President and COO, a position he held until December 2014. During that time, Mr. Murphy was instrumental in developing the company’s focused security and acquisition strategy. Under his guidance, the company enjoyed three years of double-digit revenue growth and increased its market share in its core security market segment while building the world’s largest cloud security offering.

Mr. Murphy has more than 30 years of demonstrated successes in driving market expansion, revenue growth and operational excellence at companies such as IBM Tivoli, HP and Mercury Interactive. Prior to Blue Coat, Mr. Murphy was senior vice president for HP’s LaserJet and Enterprise Solutions business unit within the company’s Imaging and Printing Group (IPG).

Mr. Murphy joined HP through its acquisition of Mercury Interactive, where he was chief financial officer.  Prior to that, Mr. Murphy was president and general manager of IBM Tivoli, a leader in the security, risk and compliance management market.  He was responsible for day-to-day operations and drove aggressive expansion into new and adjacent security markets, doubling sales during his four-year tenure.  Mr. Murphy also served as CEO at Asera, head of the private equity investments group at Perot Systems, and partner at McKinsey & Company. 

He holds an M.B.A. from Stanford University, an M.S.E.E from Florida Atlantic University, and a B.S. in computer science from the University of Louisville.
