Cloud Data Protection for Education

Educational institutions can count on Blue Coat to secure the clouds their faculty and students use.

Overview:

The issues for faced by Information Technology and Security professionals in the Education sector continue to increase in scope and complexity with the introduction of BYOD and public cloud computing. Every device and application with a connection to the internet holds the potential to collect and store student data.

Additionally, student personal information in the U.S. is subject to regulatory protections. The Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) requires that institutions protect the privacy of student education records in their possession as well as provide the student (or parents/guardians for students under 18) access to such education records. Read more about the (FERPA).

Schools and providers must also adhere to the regulations in the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), which applies to operators of websites and applications that are directed to or known to be used by children under the age of 13.

Cloud Adoption in Education

Cloud computing for education (replacing software traditionally installed on school or campus computers with applications delivered via the internet) is driven by dual aims of reducing public and higher educations’ IT complexity and cost. School districts and universities are doing more of their computing in the cloud. While cloud solutions for education institutions result in greater flexibility and cost savings, the migration of their sensitive data into remote data centers introduce legal, compliance, and regulatory issues.

Privacy and regulatory/compliance concerns should not stop institutions from using the cloud – the benefits are simply too compelling. The good news is that they can enjoy all the benefits the public cloud offers while simultaneously retaining full control of regulated student data. Blue Coat’s Cloud Data Protection Gateway can be used to tokenize or encrypt data before it leaves the school’s control, so they can adopt cloud application with confidence that they are maintaining the highest levels of data security and compliance.
